We're in the Yukon Now

Boya Lake to Wolf Creek Territorial Park, Whitehorse

We slept in until 8:30 this morning and were on the road an hour later.  We saw a small black bear just as we were leaving the park; it didn't stick around for a photo.

Soon after crossing into the Yukon, we were greeted with this view.

It was about a 5 hour drive to Whitehorse, where we found Glen and Cathy camped at Wolf Creek Campsite, about 15 minutes out of town.

Wolf Creek Territorial Campsite

They let us hang out in their camper to wait out an afternoon shower.  Then we ate dinner before we went on an hour hike that led from the campsite along Wolf Creek and over to the Yukon River.

Williams Lake to Boya Lake

Williams Lake to Boya Lake - Sunday, July 24 to Tuesday, July 26

We left Sunday morning and drove to Smithers.  We wound up spending an extra day  at my mother's house in Smithers because my niece was arriving that night and we had not met our three year old nephew, Orca, so it was well worth the delay.

On Tuesday we drove west from Smithers, turning north on Highway 37 at Kitwanga.  The road seemed busier than we'd ever experienced before.  It rained on and off the whole drive.  We planned to drive as far as Dease Lake, but it was raining so we kept going till Boya Lake, a wise decision as it we had no rain.  Boya Lake was almost full.

Birds of the day - 6 nighthawks hawking high above the campsite, just before bedtime.

Farwell Canyon

A couple of weeks ago my sister Dorothea came to visit.  Her friend Richard had never been out to Farwell Canyon so we drove out and attempted to find the trail to the dunes.I hadn't been out for 10 years and I could not find the trail.  We scrambled uphill and ended up below the dunes.

Saw more mariposa lilies in bloom than I've ever seen before

View down to Chilcotin River

Later we drove down to the bridge, the pictographs and the homestead on the river.

Hoodoos from the homestead

On the way out we saw several vehicles parked at the trailhead for the dunes so i'll do better for our next guests.
