6 months ago we were in Blackheath, New South Wales, while they were celebrating their Rhododendron Festival, and now we were in the Parksville when their rhododendrons were at their peak. We read about Milner Gardens, a garden operated by Vancouver Island University (Malaspina College), and its 500 species of rhodos and azaleas and had to check it out.
Milner house was designed to resemble a Ceylonese plantation house.
It looks out onto the ocean and the house and gardens are surrounded by old growth forest.
Here's a Rhododendron in closeup:
This beautiful Dove tree was new to me:
The dove tree is native to Asia and is not related to the dogwood
It started to rain so we ducked into the tearoom for soup and a scone,
Delicious
with the obligatory tea in fancy china cups.
Note the pretty flower arranement taken from the garden.
And headed back to our car through the forest in the rain.
We also checked out downtown Parksville; it was pretty quiet on a holiday, and went down to the community park and
Parksville's 2 palm trees are looking pretty healthy!
walked along the waterfront boardwalk.
It glowered, but it did not rain on us
