Rainy Day in Merida

It poured buckets today, foiling our birding plans for the day.  Instead we visited the National Museum of Roman Art.

Merida was once a very important Roman capital and has the largest number of Roman ruins in Spain, scattered throughout the town.

The museum was very interesting, built high enough to contain one Roman column.

It was full of statues, sarcophagi, and mosaics unearthed around town.

The mosaics were particularly beautiful and there were several depictions of storks,

still very much in evidence around town.

In fact we visited a ruined aquaduct with 24 arches

and probably one stork nest for each arch, each with a resident stork.

We are ensconced in a bungalow tonight, and it is comically crowded with 2 bunk beds and a twin bed, such that you have to move the bed in front of the door to get at the kitchen sink.  But we do have a toilet seat.
