49 Palms Oasis

The Mojave Desert resembles the Cariboo in that they like their numeric place names, except instead of using the distance from Cache Creek as a reference, they count the number of palms at a watering hole.  Thus the town of 29 Palms (I believe this is where John Belushi died in a motel room), the 9 Palms Motel (I could only see 6 – global warming?) in the town of 29 Palms, and the 49 Palms Oasis, destination of today’s hike.

We hiked over a ridge and then could see the oasis in the distance

then hiked down to the palms.

There were flowers blooming,

Bladderpod, I think

and hummingbirds feeding on the flowers, a very vocal phainopepla

and we also saw a pair of Prairie Falcons (Birds of the Day!).
