Kayaking at Port Clements

Our plan for the next day was to drive down the logging roads to Renner Sound on the west coast of Graham Island, but everyone we talked to said we'd be better off avoiding the logging trucks so we rented kayaks in Port Clements instead.

We paddled over to Yakoun River

And up the estuary past big sweepers

till we reached two abandoned cabins.  Here we saw a black bear who took off when he saw us.

It was Sybille's first time in a sea kayak!

(I fell in the water getting out of my kayak, but noone was around to take my picture, unlike some other unfortunates).

Afterwards, we walked on the Golden Spruce trail.  The golden spruce, revered by the Haida, is no more, it was cut down by a crazy man as an environmental protest, but we saw it fallen across the river.

The trail follows through beautiful forest past some big spruce trees and along the Yakoun River.

  1. Good for you for carrying on with the Haida Gwaii report despite all the travel after that. Noticed a typo in the first paragraph: Renner Sound should be Rennell Sound.
