The Sonny Bono NWR is located at the southern end of the Salton Sea.
The feeders next to the visitor centre are visited by Gambel's quail, Abert's towhee
And two Doves we haven't seen yet this trip:
Mourning Dove
And
Common Ground Dove.
Visitors are restricted to a trail that covers all the refuge's habitats:
Scrub along the irrigation ditch,
farmers fields, a reservoir,
and a rocky outlook over the shore.
We stopped at Westmoreland ("the honey capital of the world") for the local specialty, the date shake. It was surprisingly delicious, we thought it would be cloying sweet.
New birds for this trip seen today: White-fronted ibis, sora, common ground dove, mourning dove, common yellowthroat, snow geese.
