Excursions from Green Lake

On our second day we drove around Green Lake and visited the other campgrounds in the park.  At the southeast end of the lake we found ourselves in a large burnt out area, which must have been the northern limits of the Elephant Hill fire (2017).

The next day we drove down to Chasm Provincial Park, BC's Grand Canyon, as a women at the viewpoint said.

Clearly she has never been to the Grand Canyon of the Stikine, far more extensive and impressive.  Instead we'll call it the Grand Canyon of the Cariboo, and it's quite a surprise to find it just 3 km off Highway 97.

We've been here several times before but this is the first time we've found the trail that leads past the fence and along the edge to the far side.

The trail leads to a track that runs through the forest on the east side of the Chasm.  Chasm is near the northern limit of ponderosa pine and we did see one live tree, but most were killed in the pine beetle epidemic. So nice to see young Ponderosa coming back.

We went looking for a lodge or convenience store on our circumnavigation of Green Lake the previous day, but found nothing.  Today the 70 Mile House General store came to the rescue with icecream bars. Yay! Very refreshing after a hot hike.
