Sedona and the Limekiln Trail

Leah recovers from shopping frenzy

The first time we visited Arizona 30 years ago we spent a few days there and we found it too busy, too touristy and too expensive so we never went back. Till this year.  We'll it's much bigger now and even busier.

The region has invested heavily in traffic circles in the last few years; in Cottonwood this means there's a roundabout every mile, no traffic and often no roads connected to it.  They are planning for development. Very annoying.

In Sedona on the other hand there's a roundabout every 500 yards and each one is a traffic gridlock.  There's no free parking spots on the street, we lucked out that someone was leaving a parking lot as we entered.

I thought I found an authentic relic from the old days when John Wayne was making westerns here
Clear Creek Trading Company

But alas it was a replica from the 90s.

In the afternoon Mark and Leah hiked with us on the Limekiln trail in Dead Horse Ranch State Park.

The trail runs 15 miles to Red Rock State Park.

Of course we didn't go that far.

We just hiked up to the eponymous lime kiln, built into the cliff.

They excavated the kiln and added a wall of Adobe bricks (not shown)

We walked right by but discovered the sign after we turned around.

Coming back down. Lime kiln in centre of photo.

From the ridge we had a great view of the lagoons and surrounding scenery below.

Intrepid hikers:

Later in the evening we returned to the lagoons for the sunset.
