Return to San Pedro River

We spent a day resting and recuperating and the next thing we knew it was our last day in the Sierra Vista area.

We decided to revisit the San Pedro River.

We're glad we did because we saw another gray hawk fly up into the air, briefly, and a little later spotted a dark hawk silhouetted against the sky.

Leo zoomed in and we agreed this was indeed a gray hawk.

Hey, beggars can't be choosers.  That broad white stripe is also a diagnostic sign.

We also saw our first loggerhead strike in Arizona this trip, but there are no good photos.

At the pond we saw several of these

American bullfrogs, clearly the model for Kermit.

Other sightings:

Abert's Towhee

This is a song sparrow; the southwestern race is much paler than ours.

Back at the nature house, Leo was trying to make this guy into a Chihuahuan raven, but I was not convinced.

This pyrhulloxia was up to some antics.

And we could not identify this large rodent but later I looked at the photos from a previous visit (2017) and discovered it was a cotton rat.  Same guy?
